In Guatemala, the coffee sector has long been dominated by men, and gender equality remains a challenge. It is still very difficult for women in Guatemala to establish themselves and be successful in the coffee world.

La Morena is a coffee that puts the work of female farmers across Guatemala in the spotlight. They aim to create an exclusive product produced by women.

In 2015, they started with 22 women farmers from Huehuetenango who contributed to a batch of 30 bags. Now, 93 women have produced this coffee harvest, resulting in 2,900 bags. They expanded their reach to the Cubulco region by creating traceable community lots from farmers participating in the Volcafe Way program.

The women were initially identified through regional coffee competitions where they were introduced to the Volcafe Way practices. The local team could get to know the different qualities available and the women producing them.

The Model Farm approach is preferred, where producers using best practices or guided by agronomists become trainers themselves, presenting their work to the local community.

With the support of the local team, workshops can be organized, and knowledge is shared among the program participants. The work focuses on improving quality and yield, farm management, pest control, and enhancing market knowledge and financial skills.

All work together: women participating in the Volcafe Way program receive technical support and business training. This leads to improved quality and increased yields.

Besides their work in coffee, they collaborate with the Wakami organization to address broader income generation challenges in rural areas.

Wakami works with over 500 members in eight different regions, training women in finance, accounting, and market access. A two-year training program gives members enough time to make changes in the first year and refine them in the second year, aiming for long-term sustainable income generation strategies.

15 cents per pound of La Morena coffee is donated to Wakami – which is just over 22 dollars per sack. By purchasing La Morena coffee, you highlight the work of female coffee farmers and invest in the future of sustainable small-scale farms in rural Guatemala.
